The Evilness Of Nakago
Spoiler Warning! For Nakago's past. Don't read if you don't want to know!
Nakago is evil? Most will say yes. Those who defend him say he is just suffering from a psychological disorder brought on by his past. Is he really evil? It all depends on your point of view.
Yes, Nakago manipulates people to his will in order to carry out his wishes. He can also be very brutal and cruel to others, even the Seriyuu Seishi. His motivations are quite unclear throughout the entire series, however. Why does he act as he does? What is his
purpose of having such power? The absence of these facts makes Nakago all the more mysterious.
Nakago's relationship with Soi seems to be only for his immediate gain at first glance. Yet Soi shares the same kind of past as Nakago does, as both were abandoned and left to basically fend for themselves when very young. Perhaps Nakago sympathizes with Soi, and therefore their similar fates have drawn them together. Nakago's personality, developed from his past, does not allow him to show useless emotions, namely love. He is unable to demonstrate his affection for Soi, and their relationship for each other is mutually silent.
Nakago's past also has much to do with his ambitions and seemingly cruel personality. He was robbed of his innocence at a young age by seeing his mother killed, and then being molested by the emperor of Kutou. Naturally this would have built a resentment within him for authority figures. This may have lead to his quest for power over others, since he lacked power over himself as a child. And since he was taken advantage of, it would not be difficult for him to take advantage of others in order to gain what he wants.
Thus, Nakago may appear evil, yet it all depends on how you view his life and actions. His complexity as a character makes him so intriguing to try to understand. In the end, it's up to the viewer to decide on their opinion of Nakago.
